Service Clubs Must Adapt: Mike Patten OAM Writes for The Mercury on Volunteering in the Digital Age
To mark National Volunteer Week 2025, then Rotary Tasmania District Governor Mike Patten OAM wrote a Talking Point opinion piece for the Hobart Mercury, arguing that service clubs like Rotary must adapt to survive. Mike highlighted the impact of Tasmania's volunteers, who contribute the equivalent of $4 billion to the state economy each year, and pointed to Rotary projects such as the End Polio Now campaign, malaria reduction work in Timor-Leste, and the Tasmanian Rotary Youth Driver Awareness program. He argued that clubs need to embrace digital tools and flexible meeting formats to stay relevant and attract new members.
